Inner Voice $14.38 Inner Voice, a collection of works for viola and piano on the Centaur label, juxtaposes composers and compositions that might at first glance seem like little more than an assortment of 20th century viola repertoire. For violist Peter Minkler, however, the works of Britten, Rochberg, Pärt, and Shostakovich represent a distillation of what was at the core of their compositional language or what Minkler refers to as their Inner Voice. Regardless of the rationale, Minkler’s resulting program is unique and highly enjoyable. Much of the music performed, including Britten’s Lachrymae; the lush center movement of Rochberg’s sonata; Pärt’s still, breathtaking Spiegel im Spiegel (transcribed the composer); and the tragic conclusion of Shostakovich’s sonata, is slow, hushed, and reverent. It is in these moments that Minkler’s tender tone, rich sonorities, and careful application of color are at their best. In more forceful sections, balance sometimes becomes an issue with the piano obscuring Minkler’s close attention to detail, pristine intonation, and apparent communion with the composers’ intentions. Still, this album is filled with beautiful playing and exceptional musicianship. Outer Space/Inner Space $15.98 With 2001′s Outer Space/Inner Space — how apt a title and motif for this space odyssey! — Flanger vault even further forward into the future of jazz while somehow managing to keep one foot in the roots of hard bop, free jazz, Latin jazz, and samba. The grounding element is most likely the core of guest musicians, including players from Cologne, Germany; Copenhagen, Denmark; and Santiago, Chile. On the title track a robotic voice chants “outer space” over decidedly retro Latin jazz rhythms augmented by occasional synthesizer flourishes and beats that are equal parts organic percussion and electro loops, again blurring the line between jazz old and new, which appears to be the Flanger modus operandi. “Galak” is an astronaut’s floating dream with its fluid blend of spacy vibes and earthy acoustic bass, its spiraling ascent chased along by dueling congas and fusion guitar. A squelchy computer rhythm clashes with driving acoustic drums while two keyboards and processed bass and guitar battle it out furiously on “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” evocative of a more down to earth (so to speak) Squarepusher. A sexy Rhodes fuels the robot dance of “Inner Spacesuit,” while flailing funk bass propels the sci-fi theme “Le Dernier Combat.” (Is that a Spanish-speaking musician announcing something like “I’m drunk” on the fade?) The zenith, and mission statement, of this album is “It Ain’t Rocket Science,” with its dueling Coltrane-esque saxophones and grimy techstep beat programming that perfectly meld the origin and the destination of modern jazz. Comments of the Inner Chorus $11.98 Tunng’s sophomore outing finds the folktronic fabulists further exploring and refining the distinctive, gently whimsical blend of pastoral acoustic folk, electronic programming, and musique concrète that they unveiled on earlier releases. Recorded as the group was in the process of evolving from a duo (Sam Genders and Mike Lindsay, who had recorded Tunng’s debut album This Is…Tunng: Mother’s Daughter and Other Songs in the basement of a clothing shop) into a somewhat loose but stable six-member collective, the differences in their fundamental approach are minimal — thankfully so, as Tunng’s style is essentially unique and utterly entrancing — but there’s a welcome added warmth and fullness to the sound. There’s also an increased sense of cohesion to many of the compositions, making this a more organic record in feeling and form if not, technically speaking, in sonic content: the band’s electronic side is still very much in evidence, though in general it serves as a congenial complement to the songs’ acoustic-instrumental core rather than a competitive counterforce (the electronics would become substantially less prominent on Tunng’s third album, the more sedate Good Arrows). On the other hand, the eclectic array of noises and found sounds — clicks, whirs, blips, scrapes, scuffs, jangles — are just as likely to be organically derived as electronic; one of the new members, Martin Smith, is credited with “beads, reeds, bells, shells, bones, stones,” and it may well be his contributions that occasionally call to mind Califone and their unorthodox approach to percussion. The richness of its sonic detail aside, this is easily Tunng’s strongest offering for the simple reason that it features their finest batch of songs to date, which rightfully take center stage. Apart from the short introductory “Hanged” (which builds up a dizzying, jumbled mass of noise before spilling over into the initially placid-seeming “Woodcat”), and the beguiling instrumental “Stories” (something of a statement of purpose for the album, with the chopped-and-spliced spoken word sample “songs, stories, magical words”), each track is a fully realized song. Many of them feature melodies that could pass for timeless English folk tunes, in particular the cryptically titled group singalong “It’s Because…We’ve Got Hair.” If there’s an obvious standout, though, it has to be “Jenny Again,” a perfectly formed gem of sweetly chiming acoustic guitar balladry that recalls John Lennon or Simon & Garfunkel at their sweetest. That is, until a closer listen to the lyrics reveals it to be a sort of twisted murder ballad, sung from the perspective of a dead or dying man, imagining his killer’s blissful future life with his own erstwhile lover, as he lies bleeding.
